One man’s age, a wife’s hero – By Joe Teh

What do you do when you turn 60 years old?

Throw a party and celebrate the milestone of three scores no ten, with friends and family. It seems a common event in the Liberian community these days.

But for one wife, throwing a party for her husband’s 60th birthday was both a family celebration and a humble appreciation of a man who she says is a hero in her life.

“I was suicidal,” Ruth Sayon, of Worcester, Massachusetts, recalled. “But my life changed when this man (her husband, Nathaniel) came into my life.”

She explained her life story; one that was emotionally touching and how her marriage to Nathaniel Sayon, has been a blessing which elevated her from difficult life to a fulfilling family life.

“I am having this party to show my love to my husband,” Ruth says. “Nathaniel saw many beautiful women in the community. But he chose me over those women with my many life’s challenges at the time and transformed my life.”

“I love you Nathaniel,” she exclaimed. “You are a wonderful man.”

Speaker after speaker, the character of Nathaniel Sayon as a concerned, caring and respectful community member was extolled. Family and friends’ fondness of him was an unending story told by each person who spoke at the program.

Family members and friend traveled from far and near to celebrate with the Sayons Saturday night in at 30 Anna Street in Worcester, Mass.

Ms. Lovety Greene, who read Mr. Sayon’s testimonial bio, described him as a caring person, a “loving father,” who believe both the community and man can be supportive to each other.

Nathaniel works as a human services professional at Community Health Links in Worcester, providing psychosocial support to individuals with mental health problems in the community. He is a 1978 graduate of Ricks Institute in Virginia, Liberia. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Economics and a graduate degree in management.

The night was graced by a rising ethnic singing star, Marie Nyeawbo. She rocked the hall with couple of her songs with world class.
